Thanks to the caliber 2660QL4 and its mechanism composed of 135 tines instead of the usual 59, the mechanism is based on the synodic revolution observed from the Earth, requiring only one adjustment every 122 years.
With this zero-fuss quartz Scurfa, you're not paying a penny for anything other than a practical and nicely made dive watch with an excellent 120-click bezel, great lume, a solid rubber strap, and way better specs than you might expect at this price point. I paid the full list price of GBP 275 (about $325) for my M.S.22 and I'm already pumped to see the M.S.23 sometime next year.
Since last week's "It's Glowtime" keynote, I've spent a few days with the new Apple Watch Series 10 and the new colorway of the Ultra 2. In the video accompanying this article, I share some key takeaways of the new models, but I'll elaborate a little further here in text.
For jewelry, the same attention to detail applies. A custom engagement ring or a vintage bracelet from a loved one is more than just a piece of adornment; it's a keepsake imbued with emotion. Hodinkee Insurance not only provides comprehensive protection but also allows for quick and straightforward claims processing, minimizing the disruption to your life should an unfortunate event occur.
And I'm a huge Alien fan. I love the first two, and I even defend the third movie, even though everybody thinks I'm crazy. I think if David Fincher had been given a little more freedom, we would've had a triple classic on our hands right there.
The Aubry Doxas were markedly different from the curvy tonneau cases of yore. Instead, they were blocky, thick, and featured an oversized bezel. This shift in design was pervasive during the '80s. In the automotive world, curves had entirely gone out of style by 1980; instead, the decade was marked by box flares, right angles, and square panels. If the Aubry Doxas were a truck, they'd be a Jeep Wagoneer.
This new piece is like the movie Pleasantville, when Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon turn their black-and-white world into Technicolor madness. After putting this watch on my wrist, I can assure you that wearing a vibrant blue ceramic timepiece is quite different from the standard ceramic offerings of black and white.
No, my one comment, or rather my humble suggestion, would be to mix it up a little and go for something a little more geometric in terms of actual case shapes. I love the juxtaposition between gemstones and less dainty shapes. I would be so excited to see some of the Octo Finissimo DNA revamped with the playful and perfectly executed gem setting that is oh-so Bulgari.
Dressy without being stuffy, the De Ville Prestige achieves its impeccably balanced design thanks to the placement of the date aperture, the power reserve indicator, small seconds indicator at three, six, and nine o'clock respectively, as well as the Omega logo details at the 12 o'clock position. Placing these important details at the cardinal points makes the dial feel visually harmonious, streamlined, and easy to read.
Because of our mutual love for the brand, Mark kicked off the conversation by showing me the Gerald Genta designed Octo Bi- Retro from the 1980s, which is really the precursor to this watch. It has a retrograde minute and jump hour, and has the same sculptured case. Bulgari absorbed Genta's company in 2000, and their first Octo Finissimos debuted in 2014, in case you were wondering how that all worked.
very nice place
Looking at that introduction piece and James Stacey's early hands-on photos you can see that even in ceramic, the finishing AP has done makes the new Offshore case trend visually close to the original in a big way that leans into brand history and consumer nostalgia. Historically I've always thought ceramic was a material that looks better than it feels and I'd venture to say that's still the case here, but that's in part because the black ceramic just looks so incredibly good.
Given the general rounded and bubble-shaped nature of the watches Ressence is best known for, the Type 1² strikes as a bit of a lovable anomaly among the bunch. The cushion-shaped case combined with the multitude of brushed surfaces on the dial and deep monochromatic blue color palette imparts a remarkably more dressy, even formal, appearance compared with the brand's other creations, which isn't a bad thing at all.
The nostalgic pull is strong with these, especially for 85 bucks. And while I'm not at all wild about the two colorways we were fortunate enough to get in for photography, I do think that each and every version has its own charm that adds a bit of childlike fun into an otherwise straightforward and accessible watch.
So what happened on that day? Johnson doesn't have a clue. That's what makes it so interesting. The pocket watch served as a starting point to dig into his own family history. His mother found it in one of her mother's drawers, and naturally, it ended up with Johnson, the only watch-obsessed person in the family. He's still digging into the family's West Coast roots.
Inside you have Seiko's 6R35 movement, running at 21,600 vph with a 70-hour power reserve. Here's where the interpretation will probably meet its make-or-break moment for a lot of buyers – a date display through a small circular aperture at 4:30. It's also one of the things throwing me off from that first moment.
In the bag, I found some 24 watches and one deeply triggering charm bracelet (stay tuned for that). All 24 were quartz, none were running, the majority were likely intended as ladies' models, and several were from a brand that remains a mystery to both my colleagues and me. So let's break them into the following – the good, the bad, and the unknown.
Rolex being, well … Rolex, found a submarine, the Bathyscaphe Trieste, and strapped the watch to the outside of the sub’s observation tower and bid its two-man crew bon voyage. Now one does not just head for the bottom of the ocean on the first outing, and the development of the diving profile (along with the Deep Sea Special) was based on several stages of depth over a window of time, from 1953-1960.
I bought this watch to celebrate the launch of HODINKEE Japan last year. I love this combination – yellow gold and stainless steel. The MM size is so compatible that I don't need to take it off while working at the desk.
The Spring Drive GMT is about as core Grand Seiko as it gets, combining the company's exclusive, highly accurate electro-mechanical timekeeping technology with the complication that we tend to associate more than any other with the Japanese brand. Seeing these two watches with their newly evolved looks that double down on the aesthetics that bring enthusiasts to Grand Seiko signals bright days ahead.
